Soraya (10) prepares her things, says goodbye to her parents, and grabs her little sister by hand on the way to her school. In March 2020, schools were shut down as part of the Nigerien government's prevention measures to avoid the spread of coronavirus. School closures and the economic downturn forced thousands of children, especially girls, to drop out of school. Away from school, children are vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. For many Niger's students, remote learning hasn't been an option during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The only way to resume education is to ensure a safe return to school. In maintaining physical distancing and implementing public health measures, UNICEF and its partners introduced the use of masks and promoted the importance of frequent handwashing to various educational institutions. Soraya, today, can get back to school again.
